Protecting export cables with precision rock bag installation
Brosols supported Føn Energy Services by providing specialized survey services during a rock bag installation at a Wind Farm cable crossing.
The area had previously undergone two repairs, with the most recent protected by concrete mattresses. Rock bags were added as an extra layer of protection for the existing installation.
Survey objectives:
-
Assess seabed conditions before and after rock bag installation
-
Support precise subsea positioning of the rock bags
-
Confirm and report the as-built locations of the rock bags
Approach
Operations were executed from the Ella F, where Brosols completed a fast two-day mobilization. A full survey spread was installed— including MBES, USBL, and dual GPS units—all integrated into Qinsy navigation software. Real-time displays enabled both the captain and crane operator to monitor operations with confidence.
Technology in Action
-
Norbit Winghead i80s: ultra-high resolution MBES with full-motion stabilization, delivering reliable 3D/4D bathymetric data in challenging conditions.
-
Gaps M7 USBL: tracked and positioned rock bags with unmatched accuracy, ensuring exact placement on the seabed.

Outcome
The installation was completed safely, precisely, and on schedule. Both our client and their end client were satisfied with the results—another successful step in safeguarding critical export cables.
“Brosols is a trusted partner, consistently delivering precision, reliability, and peace of mind to our projects.
We look forward to continuing our collaboration on future projects.”
